About North Little Rock

Once called Argenta, North Little Rock is not to be confused with its more famous neighbor, Little Rock. The two cities create the Little Rock-North Little Rock metropolitan area. Little Rock was named for a small rock formation found along the south bank of the Arkansas River. "La Petite Roche" was used by pioneers and early settlers as a landmark. The rock can still be found among the river banks today. In March of 2008 North Little Rock and Little Rock hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Basketball Tournament in North Little Rock's Attel Arena. The cities welcomed schools such as Austin Peay University, Saint Mary's College of California, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Education

Most students in North Little Rock attend public schools in the North Little Rock School District, which includes 20 schools. The Pulaski County Special School District also serves parts of North Little Rock with 6 additional schools, one of which is an elementary magnet school. Colleges and vocational schools in the area include Publaski Technical College, Lee's School of Cosmetology and New Tyler Barber College. Next door in Little Rock are 2 major universities as a part of the University of Arkansas System: the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. UALR now offers over 50 undergraduate major programs, graduate and professional programs, and an extensive schedule of classes including night, weekend and online courses. Two smaller, private, and historically-black colleges are also found in the city: the Philander Smith College and Arkansas Baptist College.

Attractions

Down the road in Little Rock is the William J. Clinton Presidential Center which includes the Clinton Presidential Library, offices of the Clinton Foundation, and the Clinton School of Public Service. The museum overlooks the Arkansas River and houses 2 million photos, 80 million pages of documents, 21 million e-mail messages and nearly 80,000 artifacts, including Clinton's collection of saxophones. The museum is open to the public and has a full-scale replica of the Clinton-era Oval Office. Also in Little Rock is the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, which is the last-remaining structure of the Little Rock Arsenal, one of central Arkansas' oldest buildings.
